How Do Spabar Laser Hair Removal Treatments Work?

Specifically-filtered pulsed light destroys cells that grow new hair,
while contact cooling ensures your comfort each and every visit.

Hair follicles are an integral component of the skin, and each hair is a keratinized product of the follicle. Each and every hair follicle undergoes a cycle of activity - the hair grows to a maximum length, then hair growth ceases and the hair is shed and replaced. The phases of the hair growth cycle include:

1. Anagen   - a long period of growth - from months up to 10 years
2. Catagen  - the transitional period from growing to resting lasting 2 to 4 weeks
3. Telogen  - a period of inactivity lasting 2-4 months
4. Exogen   - the stage when a hair is shed.

From 20%-70% of hairs in any body area can be in the Anagen phase at a given time. This fact is important because treatments are only effective during the Anagen phase when the hair follicle in still attached to the bulb. This means that multiple treatments are necessary to treat all hair follicles on a given body area.

During your session, the treatment head is passed over the area to be treated, emitting a light that converts to heat energy as it comes into contact with the melanin in your hair. This heat energy travels down the follicle to the hair bulb, disabling the hair bulb and any feeder blood vessels permanently.

To permanently disable hair growth, the base of the hair follicle must be heated to more than 70 degrees. Spabar's Palomar Starlux system, unlike many other systems used for permanent hair reduction, generates sufficient energy, correct wavelengths and surface cooling to create the right environment to permanently disable the hair bulb.

Treated hairs treated will fall out within a week or two allowing the hairs in the Catagen and Telogen growth stages to reach Anagen by your next treatment date.

Successive treatments also allow the damaged (but not yet disabled) hair follicles treated in your last visit, to be re-treated. Repeated sessions, timed correctly, ensure that all hair follicles have maximum exposure to the correct amount of light and heat at the right time.

The hair follicles that have been permanently disabled will not grow again. There will be some dormant hair follicles in the skin at the time of treatment and these may grow back at a later stage. Some people choose to return for a maintenance 'top-up' treatment every twelve months or so. This will depend on your individual hair growth and desired long-term effect.

What should I do before my treatments?

There is no need to grow your hair before treatment as the area to be treated can be shaved as part of our service. If you would prefer to minimise the time needed for your visit, you are welcome to shave the area to be treated yourself on the morning of your visit.

Please avoid any form of tanning 4-6 weeks before treatment. This includes spray tans, solariums and sun tans. Also avoid waxing, plucking, bleaching, depilatory creams and electrolysis at lease 4-6 weeks before treatment.  It is acceptable to shave.

Permanent hair reduction procedures have been available for many years world-wide, and are now a very common procedure in Australia.

How Long Does The Procedure Take?

What Areas Can I Have Treated?

What Happens After My Treatment?

You can expect recovery to be immediate, depending on the size and location of the are treated. The area may be slightly red for a few hours.

For the first 24 hours, avoid the sun, exfoliation and tight clothing as these can irritate the area. Do not wax of tweeze your hair between treatments as this encourages hair growth and strength. It is acceptable to shave or trim the area.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Everyone is different, and during your consultation you will receive the best assessment and advice about your options.
